Counselling
It is
important to realise that while your dog or cat is unique it is
very unlikely that the problem behaviour is. I will work with you
to find a solution that is not only manageable but is individually
tailored to fit in with your family, home and lifestyle. There are
many differing definitions of what constitutes a problem. For example
some people might define an aggressive dog as one which bites, where
as others may feel that barking or growling constitutes aggression.
However, if you feel your animals’ behaviour is a problem
then it needs to be resolved and I can help you with this. Many
owners worry that they have caused their dogs behaviour, it is true
that owners can inadvertently reinforce bad behaviour, but owners
should not blame themselves. It is the responsible owner who seeks
help to remedy the problems. Whatever the problem, there is usually
a way of either managing it or resolving it so that owners can live
happily with their pet, the start of this process is the behavioural
consultation.
A consultation usually takes one and a half to two hours, depending
on the complexity of the problem. During the consultation the problems
you are experiencing with your pet are discussed in detail and a
full history taken of your pet’s lifestyle. This will enable
the behaviourist to fully understand the problem and provide you
with the correct advice in order to help you and your pet. A written
report will follow the consultation detailing the problem and rehabilitation
programme. Clients are encouraged to keep in touch on a weekly basis
by phone/email to discuss progress, telephone / email support is
available as often as it is needed until the problems are resolved.
